Treatment of herpes simplex, infections of skin and mucous membranes including initial and recurrent genital herpes. Suppression of recurrent herpes simplex infections. Prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immune compromised patients. Treatment of herpes zoster infections. For the treatment of chickenpox in certain groups at increased risk of severe varicella or its complications. These groups are as follows: Patients over 13 years of age who are otherwise healthy. Children over 12 months of age with chronic cutaneous or pulmonary condition, or receiving long term salicylate therapy. Children receiving short or intermittent courses of aerosolized corticosteroids. The drug should not be taken if more than 24 hours passed from the onset of a typical chickenpox rash.
